Music gigs, art performances, fashion shows and beauty pageants are among the entertainments that are part of life in mega cities, including Jakarta. While infamous for traffic jams and pollution once in a while Jakarta lays on some big events that proudly bear the city’s name in their titles.
Here are some of the most anticipated events in Jakarta:
Jakarta anniversary
The city administration usually prepares dozens of festivities for the month-long celebration of the capital’s anniversary that falls on June 22. As a part of the celebration, hotels usually serve Betawi traditional dishes such as kerak telor (egg crust), along with their regular menus. Highlights of the anniversary are discounts in shopping malls all over the city during the Jakarta Great Sale, the Abang None beauty pageant and the one-month Jakarta Fair in the Jakarta International Expo (JI Expo) in Kemayoran.
JakJazz
The Jakarta International Jazz Festival (JakJazz) is the oldest jazz festival in the country and has inspired other similar festivals. Held for the first time in 1988 at Taman Impian Jaya Ancol amusement park, the on-off jazz festival has been around 12 times in various different locations, including in Pasar Festival in Kuningan, South Jakarta, and Plaza Timur Senayan and Istora Senayan, both in Central Jakarta.

Last year in October, the festival presented 90 local and international performers and entertained visitors with side performances, such as a capoeira dance performance, street fashion show and a screening of the movie History of Jazz. “I am a live music fan, especially of jazz. JakJazz is definitely on my list because it delivers pure jazz music,” Manpalagupta Sitorus, 34, told The Jakarta Post, adding that he loved watching performances of local seasoned jazz musicians, such as Idang Rasjidi and Otti Jamalus.
Jakarta Fashion Week
The city finally had its first ever fashion week in 2008, with the birth of Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW). Organized by publisher Femina Group, the annual event has grown to become a place for young and established designers to showcase their works. Diaz Parzada, who has been in charge as the creative director of the event since the beginning, said the occasion was originally called Festival Mode Indonesia, when it was held over three days in 2007. “We changed the name to Jakarta Fashion Week in 2008 as suggested by former governor Fauzi Bowo,” he told the Post. The festival is usually held every November.
JIFFest
The Jakarta International Film Festival (JIFFest) became a celebration for movie buffs in the capital city when it was first held in 1999. The festival, which featured hundreds of international and local films, was gradually held in smaller venues due to financial constraints. Film lovers had to grieve in 2011 and 2012 as the noteworthy independent event was halted due to a lack of funding.
Djakarta Warehouse Project
Nightlife lovers will not miss the Djakarta Warehouse Project as the event features the latest digital technology and top DJs who are ready to heat up the dance floor. Staged by Ismaya Live, the event that has been held for six years is the biggest annual dance festival in the country. In December last year, an amazing laser light show that went along with the music provided greater entertainment to thousands of people who came to Istora Senayan, Central Jakarta.
