Strong winds and high waves that have battered the coastline of Buleleng over the last several days have aggravated the level of sea erosion at several points. One of the worst-affected areas was the Segara Temple compound in Patas village, Gerokgak district. The erosion has damaged a 200-meter strip of asphalt road that leads to the temple and destroyed most of the temple’s concrete foundation.
“If we do not act immediately, there is a possibility that the temple will collapse and crumble,” Patas village chief I Nengah Suberata said. He recalled that a period of heavy wind and powerful waves also took place last year. “But at that time the erosion triggered by the wind and waves did not affect the road or any part of the temple.” The villagers planned to build a protective wall using sandbags to secure the temple compound. “But it is a temporary measure and we need a long-lasting solution,” Suberata said, adding that the regency administration had yet to provide any response to the village’s official letter asking for assistance.
