0 City to continue revitalization program

Denpasar mayoralty plans to continue revitalizing old and dilapidated traditional markets to improve their quality and competitiveness amid the flood of modern markets and supermarkets. Dewa Gde Rai, spokesperson for the mayoralty, said that in early 2013 the administration would start a massive renovation program of the traditional market in Nyanggelan village on Jl. Tukad Pakerisan.

The renovation is part of the government-sponsored traditional market revitalization program, commenced under the auspices of the Trade Ministry. “Last year, this traditional market already received minor renovation costing around Rp 200 million [US$20,700]. With the upcoming renovation, the market will have a major refurbishment,” said Rai. In Denpasar, there are 16 traditional markets managed by PD Pasar Denpasar, the traditional-market management company, in addition to 33 customary village markets.

PD Pasar has so far revitalized six traditional markets and 13 village markets. Pasar Agung Peninjoan is one of the 10 exemplary models of traditional markets in Indonesia. The market was renovated at a cost of Rp 7.5 billion, funded by the central government. “Denpasar will continue to revitalize all its traditional markets to battle the stiff competition from supermarkets and mini markets,” he said.

Made Westra, director of PD Pasar Denpasar, said that the company also planned to refurbish Pasar Kumbasari and Pasar Badung traditional markets in downtown Denpasar. “In 2012, we finished several projects, including the construction of parking lots. In 2013, we will also resume some projects with funding from the company and the administration,” Westra stated.

Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan said during a recent visit to Pasar Agung Peninjoan that the business turnover at the newly renovated market had increased dramatically by more than 100 percent. “Every month, the market’s turnover is around Rp 2.4 billion,” the minister said. The minister also visited Pasar Nyanggelan and two markets in Gianyar. “The ministry has allocated Rp 9 billion from the state budget for the renovation of the three traditional markets,” he said.

The renovation projects are slated for completion by the end of 2013. Wayan Darmana, head of Nyanggelan traditional market, said that renovation funding from the ministry would be used to refurbish various facilities.
