Bali police raided an illegal Liquefied
Petroleum Gas (LPG) refueling station in Nuansa II A residential area in
Jimbaran. The officers confiscated hundreds of 3-kilogram and 50-kg LPG
canisters and arrested a suspect identified as IGS, 33. Bali Police
senior-ranking detective Adj. Sr. Comr. Tri Kuncoro said the raid was
made following a tip from the locals, who suspected that the station was
conducting an illegal activity.
“A strong smell of gas was produced by
the station and the local community was disturbed by that smell and the
fear that something bad might happen, especially since the station lies
next to an elementary school.” The suspect could not produce any valid
documents for the canisters, which prompted the officers to seize 530
full 3-kg LPG canisters and 30 empty ones, as well as ten full 50-kg LPG
canisters and 10 empty ones.
“There are indications that the suspect
was involved in the illegal activity of transferring the contents of
3-kg canisters into 50-kg LPG canisters,” he said, pointing out eight
iron pipes and large ice blocks found in the station. The practice
generates a significant profit because the government still subsidizes
the smaller LPG canisters.
