The central government has bestowed the
Adi Karya Pangan Nusantara award on two farmers’ groups in Bali in
acknowledgement of their efforts to improve the island’s food
resilience. The Provincial Village Empowerment Agency (BPMPD) head, Putu
Astawa, disclosed Sunday that the recipients were subak (traditional
irrigation and farming group) Bengkel of Petang village, Badung, and
Sari Mekar farmers’ group of Bebandem village, Karangasem.
“The awards were presented by President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to representatives of these groups on Friday in
Jakarta,” he said. Subak Bengkel received the award following its
successful program to provide economic incentives to its members who had
managed to increase their production, as well as to solidify the
subak’s economic assets through the establishment of a co-op. “On the
other hand, Mekar Sari was praised for its post-harvest initiatives,
including its processing facility that produces fish crackers.” The
recipients were given a certificate, trophy and a package of technical
assistance to expand their initiatives.
