Two sisters cheated death by seconds on Friday when their car stalled in the middle of a railroad crossing in Bumi Serpong Damai, South Tangerang. The sisters, Bogor residents Camelia Fitri and Titik Handayani, were driving to the Rawa Buntu station to catch a commuter train to Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, when the engine of their silver Daihatsu Taruna minivan suddenly gave out.
"We immediately decided to get out of car and leave it on the tracks," Camelia told journalists at the location. "We had no time to ask for help from people, as the train from Jakarta was coming closer." The train, travelling the express route from Tanah Abang to Merak, plowed into the minivan seconds later, dragging it for ten meters. Nugrahadi, who monitors traffic at the Rawa Buntu station, said it was illegal for vehicles to cross the tracks at the point used by the sisters, so no warning signs nor crossing bars had been installed.
