0 Nyepi is not a Day to Go Walkabout

Two Australian Men Detained for Walking Kuta Streets on Nyepi – Bali’s Official Day of Silence

During Bali’s mandatory day of absolute silence two Australian citizens taken into custody by neighborhood enforcement members (pacalang) in Kuta on Nyepi Day  March 12, 2013, when they were discovered wandering the streets near Poppies Lane. The two were brought to the local community chief at Banjar Pangabetan where they were subjected to intensive questioning.

Beritabali.com quotes Mangku Urip, a pecalang from the Village of Kuta, that the two unidentified men taken into custody had violated the basic rules of Nyepi forbidding residents to leave the home compounds or place of accommodation for 24-hours starting from sunrise on March 12, 2013. The two men told patrolling pacalang that they were staying at The Suka Beach Hotel.

Religious custom in Bali dictates that during the 24-hours of silence on Nyepi residents of the island are expected not to light fires or lamps (Amati geni); not to work (Amati karya); not to travel about (Amati lelungan); and not to indulge bodily desires (Amati lelangang).
