0 Nasi Campur Wardani, a tourist favorite

Nasi campur (mixed rice) is a popular dish in Bali. While in most food stalls, nasi campur is generally very cheap, or at least relatively affordable, nasi campur Wardani is quite expensive at Rp 35,000 (US$3.60) per portion. In Denpasar, Warung Wardani is quite famous among tourists for its nasi campur. Although the stall also sells soto ayam (chicken soup), soto babat (offal soup), gado-gado (vegetables in peanut sauce) and nasi kare (curry rice), its nasi campur still is the most sought after dish, time after time.

A plate of nasi campur at Warung Wardani consists of rice, fried prawns, jerk beef, beef satay, shredded chicken and Balinese spicy egg, as well as stir-fried green beans and chili sauce. Various beverages are available, such as es dawet (rice flour jelly in sweetened coconut milk), es daluman (an iced traditional jelly drink), es kelapa muda (iced young coconut water), and es sirop (shaved ice with syrup). Wardani’s faithful customers usually return for the tasty sweet and spicy beef satay and the crunchy jerk meat.

Many of the customers come from Jakarta and other major cities in Indonesia, who prefer to dine on non-pork food. This stall has also attracted a growing number of foreign tourists, particularly from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. “A relative of mine always asks me to bring nasi campur Wardani or its beef satay when I return from Bali,” said Rahmi, a customer from Jakarta. One key factor behind the popularity of this food stall with tourists is its successful attempt in adapting Balinese traditional cuisine for the non-Balinese taste buds. Local cuisine is best known for its thick spicy taste and oily appearance.

Wardani transformed the local cuisine into offerings dominated by a sweet taste and with as little oil as possible. Warung Wardani is situated on Jl. Yudistira. Although the stall is clean and quite comfy for dining, it has insufficient parking, thus, many of its customers’ cars are usually parked along Jl. Yudistira.
