Police in Bogor have arrested four teenage boys for the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl, in the latest case of sexual assault against a minor in the Greater Jakarta area. Adj. Comr. Imron Ermawan, the Bogor district police’s chief of detectives, said on Thursday that the four suspects were being investigated by the police’s special victims unit. He said they were arrested last Saturday, three days after the alleged rape. “Prior to the incident, the victim was in an angkot [public minivan] on her way home from school,” Imron said.
The angkot was driven by one of the suspects, a 19-year-old. Along the way, he stopped to pick up the other three boys, two 15-year-olds and one aged 14, before heading off to the driver’s home, Imron said. “Once there, the four suspects proceeded to rape and violate the victim. Afterward, they drove her to the Leuwiliang market and left her there,” he said. “The victim only reported the incident to the police after a couple of days. Based on her statement, we immediately arrested the four suspects.”
He added that the three younger boys were arrested at their school, while the driver was arrested at his uncle’s home. All four face charges of rape under the 2002 Child Protection Law, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years. The case is the latest involving the sexual assault of a minor in the Greater Jakarta area in recent months. Last week, police in the city of Bogor arrested a 50-year-old man for allegedly raping his 13-year-old neighbor at least six times over a period of three months.
The suspect, identified as Yatin Sugarno, claimed that he committed the rape because his wife often rejected his sexual advances. He said he had not had sex with his wife in more than a year. In mid-January, police in Jakarta arrested the father of an 11-year-old girl who died earlier in the month from an infection contracted after being raped. He admitted to raping her on at least two occasions.
