The Central Sulawesi provincial administration recorded only 35 major violent incidents, including terrorist acts and inter-village clashes, in the province in 2012. The number is a steep reduction from the 100 or so handled by the police in the previous year.
“Most violence occurred in Sigi and Poso regencies,” said Baharuddin H.T., assistant to the governor on public administration affairs in a hearing with the provincial legislative council on Wednesday. Accompanying Baharuddin to the hearing were Poso, Sigi, Morowali and Donggala regents and the Palu mayor, regions where terrorism and inter-village brawls were prevalent last year. According to him, the violent incidents were mainly triggered by conflicting interests among communities, deteriorating morality and widening social gaps in society. “The province lacks a social figure and informal leaders to set good examples on religious harmony.”
