Amid speculation of a cabinet reshuffle, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Friday confirmed there were no plans in the near future. “I affirm that there is no such plan so far... for a cabinet reshuffle,” Yudhoyono said during an impromptu visit to Tanjung Pasir in Tangerang district. The president, who said his statement was necessary so that there was “certainty,” reiterated that there no immediate plans but also added that he could not guarantee that there would be no reshuffle before 2014.
Yudhoyono said the position of the Youth and Sports Minister, left vacant by Andi Mallarangeng who resigned after he was declared a graft suspect on Dec. 7, would be filled by a cadre of the Democratic Party in the near future. The Democratic Party had six cabinet seats but lost one following a reshuffle in 2011. Andi, a cadre of the Democratic Party, resigned last month after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named him as a graft suspect linked to the Hambalang sports complex project in Bogor.
"There have been so many reports in the media naming a candidate for the youth and sports minister as being A, B, C and D. Those did not come from me. I hope those people named in the media do not get angry with me, because the fact is there has yet been no nomination," Yudhoyono said. Andi's duties are temporarily being handled by the Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono. During his visit to the fishing village, the president visited the local branch office of the state Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), walked around the village and visited the local fish auction market.
