0 17th French Film Festival comes to Surakarta

The 17th Festival du Cinema Francais, popularly known as the French Film Festival, will come to Surakarta, Central Java, for the first time from Jan. 19 to 20. The annual festival, established in 1996, is Indonesia’s oldest foreign movie festival and aims to bring French cinema to the people of Surakarta, according to the organizer of the festival, Institute Francais Indonesia (IFI) Yogyakarta chapter. 

“We want to show that French movies are capable of competing with Hollywood movies,” IFI Yogyakarta director Xavier Ricard said on Friday. Five movies will be screened at Solo Square XXI cinema during the festival, starting with Asterix & Obelisk: God Save Britannia, which will be screened at 5 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the screenings of Comme un Chef, Intouchables, Camille Redouble and Les Lyonnais. 

The festival will also screen 10 short movies directed by the finalists of a short film competition in a bid to find young and talented directors to be sent to France to participate in a short movie festival in 2013. Apart from Surakarta, the festival will also make stops in Jakarta, Bali, Balikpapan, Bandung, Lampung, Makassar, Malang, Medan, Semarang and Surabaya.
